Description

Residents of the Nur Shams refugee camp in West Bank could be seen cheering the return of militant commander Mohammad Jaber, also known as 'Abu Shuja', on Friday.

Footage shows the crowd carrying him on their shoulders, as well as celebratory gunfire. Jaber is a commander of the Tulkarm Battalion of the Al-Quds Brigades, a paramilitary group and armed wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

Local reports suggested that a group of residents managed to free him from the Thabet Thabet Hospital in Tulkarm, where he had been surrounded by Palestinian security forces, having been admitted for treatment following a bomb explosion.

The Al-Quds Brigades, Al-Qassam Brigades (Hamas), and Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades all reportedly called on the residents of Tulkarm to mobilise in order to prevent the Palestinian security forces from capturing him.

The official Palestinian news agency (WAFA) had not published any details about the incident at time of publication.

The PIJ is designated a 'terrorist group' by the US, EU, Israel and allies.

In April, Jaber was reported killed by the Israeli military, but later resurfaced during a funeral for Palestinian militants killed in clashes at the Nur Shams camp.
