Description

On Thursday, 17 people, including four children, were killed in an Israeli attack on the Nuseirat Martyrs School for displaced people in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. This was reported by the Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA).

Footage filmed at Al-Awda Hospital showed shrouded bodies lying on the ground, with families of the victims crying and comforting each other. Injured children were also seen lying on beds inside the hospital. The aftermath of destruction and rubble could also be seen inside a refugee school.

"Suddenly, as I was climbing the stairs inside the school, I heard a loud explosion. I went outside and found that my cousin and aunt had been martyred, my niece was martyred inside the classroom. My mother was injured in the head, and my sister was trapped under the rubble with her leg bone visible. My other sister is missing,” said Baraa, a refugee child.

"Nowhere is safe, praise be to God. They are all innocent and poor children. What can one do? Where does he go? Praise be to God," explained Um Mohammed, a displaced woman.

A displaced person said that the school had not been bombed for more than a year, but that they expected it to be targeted at any time. "The school hosted displaced children, women, and innocent people. There are no wanted individuals here. The occupation claims it is a command-and-control centre. It is all lies and false allegations."

For its part, the Israeli army announced in a statement on Thursday that it had targeted “a command and control centre in the Nuseirat area, which was previously used as the Nuseirat Martyrs School, and was used by terrorists to plan and carry out terrorist operations against IDF forces and the State of Israel."

It noted that it was making 'great efforts to prevent harm to uninvolved civilians.'

The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza broke out on October 7 after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

In the Gaza Strip, Israel launched a large-scale response of airstrikes and a ground incursion. Palestinian officials reported that 42,847 people had been killed and more than 100,544 at the time of publication.
