Former US President Donald Trump held his first campaign rally since the Butler assassination attempt in Harrisburg on Wednesday, hitting out at VP Kamala Harris and US President Joe Biden.

"In the wake of this heinous attack, we gather tonight more determined than ever. Our resolve is unbroken and our will is undeterred. Nothing will stop us on our mission to make America great again. Nothing's going to stop us. Our country is doing badly," Trump said.

He went on to offer his gratitude to those involved in treating the injured after the assassination attempt including firefighter Corey Comperatore, who lost his life during the rally and to whom Trump referred as a 'hero'.

"Corey Comparatore. A very brave guy, loved by his family and his friends. He was really loved. In his last act on this earth, Corey threw himself over his wife and daughters and died shielding them from the bullets of a very disturbed guy. Corey is a hero to all of us," Trump said.

He went on to criticise VP Kamala Harris calling her 'a radical-left puppet candidate' and 'totally scripted', as he mocked an endorsement call by former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle which he claimed was staged.

"Everything about Kamala Harris' rollout is phoney and fake. Did you see when president Obama and Michelle called. Did you see? 'Hello, hello', 'Yes? Who is this?', 'Oh this is Michelle and Barack...', 'Oh... oh... so surprised to hear'. They've got four cameras in front. 'Oh.. oh, I'm so surprised....', 'Listen we just want to congratulate you on destroying Joe Biden... I mean on winning'. Was that the phoniest phone call you have ever seen," Trump asked.

At a separate event, Trump claimed that he 'didn't know' Kamala Harris was 'Black', during a forum at the National Association of Black Journalists Annual Convention in Chicago on Wednesday.

Harris herself described the comments as 'divisiveness and disrespect' in a speech to a Black sorority on the same day in Houston.

The 59-year-old VP is set to face Trump in November following President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the election race. She is the daughter of a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, attending Howard University and was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority which are both historically Black institutions.
