Bulgarian President Rumen Radev called to 'quickly saturate' the armed forces with new capabilities as the country is 'in the centre of this broad region of instability' during the Consultative Council for National Security's meeting in Sofia on Friday.

"We must realise what region we are in and what we can expect as a trend in the development of the security environment - to the north is Ukraine, to the south is the Middle East, to the west are the Balkans, to the east is the Caucasus," he explained.

"We see what is happening in Ukraine - a $1,000 drone destroys a $5 million tank. We need to quickly saturate our armed forces with such systems that allow us to include different platforms in a single information space, as well as to be compatible with our allies," Radev continued.

The president also underlined that the government is working on a law to introduce military training for civilians in response to the ongoing armed conflicts in neighbouring regions to prepare Bulgarians for the 'defence of the motherland'.

"There is no such law. That is why we united around the plan to create and adopt such a law - this will be done by the legislative and executive powers. They will choose the form to give to every Bulgarian citizen who has fulfilled its constitutional obligations," Radev said.

He also warned about an alleged 'risk of larger migration flows' to Bulgaria as well as the 'possibility of terrorist attacks' amid the ongoing Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon.

The meeting came as caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev held the meeting of the Security Council to the Council of Ministers and called to establish a task force for close monitoring of the situation in the Middle East which will reportedly be led by Deputy Foreign Minister Elena Shekerletova.

Recently, Bulgaria reportedly evacuated 169 of its citizens from Lebanon over two days, an effort supported by Glavchev and the Bulgarian Embassy in Lebanon.
