President Mohammad Shahabuddin called upon Yunus to lead the transitional government after the dissolution of parliament and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Hasina stepped down amid intense student protests and widespread unrest over a controversial quota system reserving 30 percent of government jobs for families of veterans from Bangladesh's 1971 Liberation War.
The protests, driven by demands for the abolition of the quota system and justice for over 200 people who died in the violence, led to Hasina fleeing to India.
Yunus, at 84, will head the transitional government until new elections are held in the coming months.
