Description

Russian citizens living in Burkina Faso were seen casting their ballots at a polling station in Ouagadougou on Sunday as early voting commenced for the Russian presidential elections.

Footage shows expatriates arriving at the Russian embassy, registering and placing their votes in ballot boxes.

“The feeling I have is pride in being the citizen of the country who is really participating in important events today,” one voter said.

“Russia determines world politics. I see with my own eyes how it all happens, how the world changes and it's very important to me and I'm happy to be able to affect these processes through my vote," added a second.

Anna Coulibaly Ratchina, Honorary Consul General of Russia in Burkina Faso said the Russian embassy in Ouagadougou had not been open for voters since 1992.

“The fact that the presidential elections are coinciding precisely with the opening of the embassy is very important for the entire Russian community, I think also for Burkina Faso which is currently looking to Russia. We hope that this event will be one of the milestones in 2024," she added.

Russia's presidential election takes place over three days from March 15-17, with early voting between February 25 and March 14.

The four candidates are Leonid Slutsky of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), the Communist Party's Nikolai Kharitonov, Vladislav Davankov of the New People Party and incumbent President Vladimir Putin, running as an independent candidate.
