Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Galant said that Israel is not at war with the people of Gaza or Lebanon, but is fighting against Hamas, Hezbollah, ‘and their backers, the Iranian regime’, during his speech in Washington on Wednesday.
“I am personally committed to facilitating the delivery of essential humanitarian aid to Gaza. We only fight those who seek to harm us. Together, let's move forward with strength and compassion,” said Galant.
The defence minister also called on Hamas to comply with the three-phase deal backed by US President Joe Biden to put an end to the war in Gaza.
Gallant has been on an official visit to Washington since Sunday at the invitation of US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin, his first visit since the International Criminal Court requested arrest warrants for Gallant and Netanyahu on war crimes charges in May.
The war between Israel and Hamas broke out after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on northern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people and kidnapping more than 200 others, mostly civilians.
In turn, Israel launched a full-scale campaign of airstrikes and ground incursions, killing at least 37,718 Palestinians and injuring more than 86,377 others, as of the time of publication.
