US Vice President Mike Pence attended a ceremony at the Pentagon in Arlington on Tuesday to honour the victims of the September 11 attacks.

"The terrorists who carried out these attacks sought not just to take the lives of our people and crumble buildings, they hoped to break our spirit and they failed," Pence said while addressing ceremony attendees, after laying a wreath at the memorial. "The American people showed on that day and every day since we will not be intimidated. Our spirit cannot be broken."

"It's amazing to think that 17 years since that day nearly 5.5 million Americans volunteered to serve in the armed forces of the United States. Those courageous men and women turned a day of tragedy into a triumph of freedom," he added.
