The Olympic flag landed at Malpensa airport in Milan on Monday, as Italian athletes returned from the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Italian athletes were successful at this year's competition, bringing home 17 medals.

"There was a great team spirit, there was a spirit of sharing, everyone wanted to share moments together. This [spirit] I will carry with me in my memories. I think it is an honour for all of us to have the next Olympics at home," explained bronze and silver medalist Federica Brignone.

The mayors of Milan and Cortina, hosting the 2026 Winter Games, shared both enthusiasm and a sense of responsibility towards the preparations for the games.

"Now, we are facing the most important phase, also the one I prefer, and that is the work phase. Certainly, the operational team must prepare an extraordinary edition," said Beppe Sala, Mayor of Milan.

The last time the Winter Olympics were in Europe, the competition was also held in Italy during the 2006 games in Turin.
