Description

Dozens of Israeli supporters rallied outside Columbia University in New York City on Monday to denounce anti-Semitism on the one-year anniversary of Hamas's attack on southern Israel and the start of the ongoing war in Gaza.

Footage shows protesters rallying by the 116 Street Station entrance. Many can be seen waving Israeli and American flags or holding up signs reading 'This Jew will not be silenced' and 'We stand with Israel'. Meanwhile, campus security can be seen checking students' IDs at the university's entrance.

"For an entire year, the Jewish people have not been able to just join together and just be a community that is grieving, that is feeling the pain. Because every time we would go outside, there would be protests against us, there would be shouting against us, there would be rocks thrown at us," said one protester, Shay Davidovik.

"This is the first time that we are able to just come and say: 'We are not fighting anyone, we just want to be ourselves and we just want to be a community. And that is what we are doing," he continued.

Similar rallies commemorating the October 7 attack were also held in other cities around the globe this week, including in Berlin, Vancouver and London.

The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza broke out on October 7 after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

In the Gaza Strip, Israel launched a large-scale response of airstrikes and a ground incursion. Palestinian officials reported that 41,870 people had been killed and more than 97,000 injured at the time of publication.

Meanwhile, Lebanese, Iranian and Palestinian factions have been exchanging cross-border shellings with Israeli forces since the outbreak of the war in Gaza.

Several nations and international groups have urged for a de-escalation in hostilities across the region and called for a ceasefire in the enclave, raising concerns over the dwindling humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Some countries, including the United States, have backed Israel's operations in the region, stating the Jewish State has a 'right to defend itself'.
