Locals in Kashmir convened on Monday to hold special prayers mourning the death of Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi and accompanying officials following a helicopter crash.
Footage features participants holding pictures of Raisi, Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and Iran's leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
"Iran's president, the late Ebrahim Raisi, was the voice of the voiceless, and only Iran stands against the oppressors and with the oppressed people of the world. Ebrahim Raisi’s death is a great loss for Muslims across the globe and particularly for the oppressed people," said Nazeer Ahmad, a local.
The 63-year-old president, along with his Foreign Minister and others, was reported dead on Monday. Their US-made Bell 212 helicopter crashed in the mountains of northern Iran's East Azerbaijan province amid heavy fog on Sunday. They were returning from the inauguration of a dam on the border with Azerbaijan.
"It is a big loss, and we cannot express this loss through our words. He was a great leader who always stood for the oppressed people. He was the leader who stood against the evil plans of America and Israel," said Syed Hamid Hussain, an Islamic scholar.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei announced five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will assume the role of acting president temporarily, pending elections in 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani will serve as acting foreign minister.
Condolences were expressed by leaders from Russia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and other nations. Raisi, a conservative cleric known for his proximity to the Supreme Leader, was elected in 2021.
