Description

Thailand's heightened security measures were seen on Tuesday, ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in the capital, Bangkok, at the end of the week.

More than 35,000 police officers will be deployed to provide protection during the 29th summit, which takes place over the Friday and Saturday.

According to national police chief Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapas, 2,000 military personnel will also be stationed in and around the convention centre to increase security for foreign leaders and delegates.

Police forces will include an explosive ordnance disposal unit, supported by detection dogs, disposal robots, and a special vehicle capable of withstanding the detonation of 1.5 kg of explosives.

World leaders are set to focus on the global economic turmoil, and are expected to work on a blueprint for recession, as well as a path to recovery.

US President Joe Biden has decided not to attend the annual meeting, with media reports suggesting he will be attending the wedding of his granddaughter. Vice President Kamala Harris will be in Bangkok instead.
