The UN General Assembly passed a resolution on Wednesday urging Israel to fully implement a 2004 International Court of Justice (ICJ) judgement and end the 'Palestine occupation'. The vote, held in New York, resulted in 124 votes in favour, 14 against, and 43 abstentions.

Among the countries opposing the resolution were the United States, Israel's closest ally, while Argentina, which abstained, raised concerns over the omission of the October 7 Hamas attack.

"The adopted resolution omits mention of the Hamas attack on 7 October 2023, a fact that cannot be ignored in any way," said Ricardo Lagorio, Argentina's Permanent Representative to the UN. "In this context, moving forward with the implementation of the advisory opinion as the adopted resolution seeks to do would put at risk those initiatives aimed at achieving a ceasefire to which the Argentine Republic is firmly committed."

The UK's representative, Barbara Woodward, reiterated support for a peaceful resolution through negotiations after the country also voted against. "The United Kingdom aims, by this statement, to indicate our clear view that Israel should bring an end to its presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories as rapidly as possible," she said, explaining the UK's decision to abstain.

Similarly, the Czech Republic's Permanent Representative, Jakub Kulhanek, whose country abstained, emphasised that "a negotiated agreement remains the only way forward to guarantee security, political stability, and democratic development for both Israel and Palestine."

The resolution calls for the withdrawal of Israeli troops and settlers from the Palestinian territories and demands sanctions against those responsible for Israel's continued presence. It also advocates for halting arms exports to Israel. The vote occurred as Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza approaches its first anniversary, with continuing violence on both sides.

The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 civilians and kidnapping over 200, currently held in Gaza. Israel's military response has included airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza, which, as of the time of publication, have resulted in at least 41,252 Palestinian deaths and over 95,497 injuries.
