Description

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying congratulated Joe Biden with taking office at a news conference in Beijing on Thursday. Hua expressed hope for an improvement of the bilateral relations following years of tensions with Donald Trump's administration.

"When I saw the fireworks at President Biden's inaugural party this morning, the crowd cheered, and I was filled with emotion. Indeed, the past period has not been easy. I think after those challenging and extraordinary times, the people of China and the United States deserve a better future" said the spokesperson.

"I believe that with the joint efforts of both sides, the good angels in China-US relations can beat the forces of evil", she added.

Hua also criticised former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other officials from Trump's cabinet, a day after Beijing imposed travel and business sanctions on 30 of them.

"China's decision to impose sanctions on relevant US personnel responds to their erroneous acts of seriously infringing upon China's sovereignty, security and development interests on China-related issues and is totally legitimate and necessary", Hua stated adding: "It fully demonstrates the firm determination of the Chinese government to safeguard national interests."
