Dozens of participants flocked to Maastricht's canals on Sunday for the ninth edition of Duckrace Maastricht, a charity event that saw a multitude of colourful rubber ducks floating down the waterways.
For a small fee of €5, anyone could have purchased a yellow plastic duck to enter the race. The event featured two races, with the second race showcasing large, uniquely decorated ducks that were sponsored by companies.
Laurent Hoeberigs, a spokesperson for Duckrace Maastricht, announced that the event had raised over €300,000 for charity. The funds will be directed towards supporting various social and solidarity projects.
Hoeberigs elaborated on the two chosen charities for this year's event. The first beneficiary is Stichting Met Je Hart, a foundation dedicated to combatting isolation among the elderly population. The second recipient is Moza Lira, an organization that supports schools, particularly those catering to students with special needs in Maastricht.
In a bid to ensure environmental sustainability, the race organisers opted for biodegradable ducks to minimize waste and prevent harm to the ecosystem.
Aside from the races, attendees were treated to a range of activities, including live performances by artists, engaging children's programs, an array of food trucks, and a refreshing selection of beverages to enjoy.
Participants of the race had the chance to win prizes such as a sports pass or a bicycle through a raffle organized by the event team.
