Berlin and Washington are 'united' amid rising speculation about the future of Nord Steam 2 if Russia invades Ukraine, according to the government spokesperson.

Journalists probed German government spokesperson Wolfgang Buchner in Berlin on Wednesday after weeks of unclear statements about if Berlin would support the US' promise that Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline would be terminated in the case of an invasion by Russia.

"Do you understand the statement by Mr Biden and the US government as a threat?" asked the journalist. "All options are on the table in case of a military intervention, that that is absolutely clear. And that it needs no further interpretation," Buchner answered.

Europe is currently facing an energy crisis and under heavy fire for its current dependency on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to deliver gas, following depleted supplies.

The chancellor's trip to Moscow is scheduled for February 15. Currently, a number of issues are straining German-Russian relations, including the delayed Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, which awaits regulatory approval, in addition to tensions at the Russian-Ukrainian border.

The US and the West have warned that Russia is planning to invade Ukraine amid a troop build-up on the regions around the Russia-Ukraine border. Moscow has repeatedly dismissed the accusations as "disinformation."
