Eritrean alpine skier Shannon Abeda called for more diversity in skiing and winters sports in general at a press conference in Beijing on Thursday.
Adeba said, "It was all sad for me to see not a lot of representation here. And I guess now that I am one of very few people here. It is a big role to play to inspire the people, but I hope that other African athletes can reach out to me for support."
He continued, "there is very much a lack of diversity on the sport and, I think that sends a really poor message to other Africans because it is hard and I know growing up in Canada, I have always felt kind of out of place."
Adeba, who competes in the men’s giant slalom, hopes he can inspire more athletes from the African continent to compete in winter sports. He became the first Eritrean to compete in any Winter Olympics following his participation in the 2018 Games.
