Description

A convoy of Russian military vehicles was deployed to an airfield to be sent to Kazakhstan as part of the CSTO forces, as reported by the Russian Defence Ministry on Thursday.

The footage released by the Ministry shows the movement of units of the 45th separate brigade of the Russian Airborne Troops Special Forces, Ivanovo and Ulyanovsk airborne formations.

The unit is being dispatched as part of a peacekeeping response amid major unrest in Kazakhstan sparked by protests that began over fuel price hikes. The mission began in accordance with an earlier decision of the CSTO Collective Security Council, the organisation's secretariat declared.

Unauthorised rallies began in the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan on Sunday after prices for liquefied gas rose from 60 to 120 tenge (€0.12 to €0.24; $0.14 to $0.28) per litre from January 1. The price hike came after the government lifted price controls on liquefied petroleum gas citing a need to liberalise the market.

According to the republic’s Ministry of Health, more than 1,000 people have been injured during the ongoing protests and almost 400 hospitalised.
