Description

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with EU Foreign Affairs Chief Federica Mogherini in Brussels on Monday to discuss the situation with the Iran nuclear deal, in the wake of Iran's decision to partially withdraw from the agreement on May 8.

Pompeo postponed a planned trip to Russia in order to head to Belgium, but he is expected to fly to Russia for meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday.

The US withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and subsequently reimposed economic sanctions upon Iran, while the other P5+1 countries, the EU and Iran all continued to stand by the agreement until last week's announcement by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

The Iranian leader announced on May 8 a partial withdrawal from the deal in a TV statement from Tehran and set a 60-day deadline for the remaining deal signatories to come up with new terms to salvage the deal.
