Thousands attended a farewell ceremony in Tabriz for Iran's President Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials who were killed in a helicopter crash earlier in the week.

“In the morning when we heard (the news of the incident), it was as if we had lost our father. A nation and a world mourned. Mr Raisi did a great service to the country," a local resident said.

Footage shows officials attending the funeral rites for the country's late president and mourners gathering around a float carrying the coffins of the deceased while others in the crowd can be seen crying.

"We won't turn our backs on our government. We are supporting our leader to the end," another attendee said.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday, according to state media and Iranian officials on Monday.

The 63-year-old president was reported dead, alongside his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others after the US-made Bell 212 helicopter came down in the mountains in northern Iran’s East Azerbaijan province during heavy fog. No official cause has been reported at time of publication.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Condolences came from the leaders of Russia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and others. Raisi, a conservative cleric seen as close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was elected in 2021.
