State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said that 'diplomatic resolution' of tensions with Lebanon is 'Israel's preferred outcome' at a press briefing in Washington DC on Tuesday.

Miller was speaking amidst heightened tensions between Israel and Lebanon and the visit to Washington this week of Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to advocate for a diplomatic solution.

"We think that a diplomatic solution is possible, we think it is in the interest of all parties (...) that they would prefer a diplomatic resolution to the situation in the north of Israel across the border and so we are going to continue to pursue that because it's in the interest of all the parties involved and most importantly in the interests of the tens of thousands of Israeli and Lebanese families who have been displaced from their homes," Miller stated in response to a question about the current situation in the region.

The war in Gaza, triggered on October 7, 2023 by a Hamas attack in southern Israel, has caused tens of thousands of civilian deaths and led to a military escalation on Israel's northern border with Lebanon, which has raised fears of an expansion of the conflict within the region.

The Israeli army and Hezbollah have exchanged fire in recent weeks, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands of residents of the border areas of southern Lebanon and northern Israel.

On Tuesday, Hezbollah claimed three attacks on military positions in northern Israel, in retaliation for an Israeli strike on Monday against its positions in the Bekaa valley in eastern Lebanon.
