Description

The investigation carried out by two independent human rights experts into the alleged poisoning of Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny accused the Russian state of being behind the act and called for further investigations during a press conference in Geneva on Monday.

“It is our conclusion that Russia is responsible for the attempted arbitrary killing of Mr. Navalny,” Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions Agnes Callamard said during the press conference.

Callamard carried out a five month investigation into the Navalny case along with the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression Irene Khan.

"The attempt on Mr. Navalny’s life did not happen in a vacuum, it happened because of who he is and what he has been doing. He’s a politician and an anti-corruption activist," Khan stated.

The prominent Kremlin critic was treated in Germany for a near-fatal alleged assassination attempt. Since his return in Russia in January, he has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for violating his parole conditions for a 2014 embezzlement conviction, while being treated in Germany.
