Rouhani blasted the US for its continued pressure on Iran and Iranian people as he addressed thousands rallying for the 41st anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Tehran on Tuesday.
"Accepting the Islamic Revolution and the victory of a great nation and driving the superpower [US] out of this land is naturally unbearable for a power like the US," said Rouhani who was met with "Death to the US" chants.
Rouhani also appealed to the nation left divided in the wake of last year’s petrol protests and the events that followed the killing of Iran’s top Quds official Qasem Soleimani.
"Dear Iranian people, criticism should exist, critics should exist, but please do not be passive," said Rouhani who urged the people to participate in the upcoming presidential elections. His calls were reportedly met by jeers and boos from the hardliners camp present at the rally.
Tensions between the United States and Iran have risen amid the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a US airstrike in Baghdad on January 3 and prompted Iranian missile fires on US positions in Iraq in retaliation.
