Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described October 7 2023 as a 'day of pain, loss and indescribable sorrow', as he marked the anniversary of the Hamas attack on southern Israel on Monday.

"The monsters of Hamas attacked our settlements, our brothers and sisters who are so dear to our hearts," he said. "We have defined the goals of the war and are realising them: overthrow Hamas rule," he continued, before stating that the 'campaign cannot be ended prematurely'.

"As long as the enemy threatens our existence and the peace of our country - we will continue to fight. As long as we are kidnapped in Gaza, we will continue to fight," he said. "I will not give up."

On October 7, 2023,  Hamas launched an unprecedented assault on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and taking more than 200 hostages, according to the Israeli side

Israel initiated an air campaign and a ground offensive in Gaza, where Palestinian authorities claim nearly 42,000 people have been killed at time of publication.

A number of hostage-prisoner swaps have taken place, although an estimated 101 hostages are believed to remain in Gaza and talks to agree a permanent ceasefire have stalled.

The conflict recently spread to Lebanon, where Israel launched a 'limited' ground incursion against militant group Hezbollah following a campaign of airstrikes. The sides have conducted cross-border strikes since the outbreak of the Gaza war.
