The construction of the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline has been completed on Friday morning, according to the Russian gas company Gazprom.
Footage seemingly filmed in September and as handed out by the Nord Stream 2 AG shows the final piece of the pipeline being welded by Fortuna pipe-laying operators in the Baltic Sea near Rugen.
The controversial pipeline commissioned by Russian gas company Gasprom is the second gas pipeline spanning from Russia to the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The 1200 km long pipeline still needs to be internally cleaned by robots and further tested until being ready for service.
The Nord Stream 2 project was debated fiercely since its conception. In a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on August 22 in Kiev, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Selenskyj called the pipeline a "dangerous geopolitical weapon of the Kremlin."
