Karine Jean-Pierre, White House Press Secretary stated that the United States are prepared to impose additional sanctions on Russia, as a response to the referenda in Ukraine, in a press conference in Washington DC on Monday.

"We are prepared to impose additional SWIFT and severe economic cost on Russia along with our allies and partners in response to these actions that we are seeing currently if they move forward with annexation, we've been very clear about that," said Pierre.

Furthermore, Pierre said that the United States has communicated to Russia, their response to a potential nuclear strike in Ukraine.

"They understand exactly what those consequences would be, we are not going to lay that out in the public, we are not going to have these negotiations or share these conversations in public but again to reiterate what our national security advisor has said just yesterday is that they have made that very clear and have spoken directly to the Russians and they understand," she said.

Regarding Edward Snowden, who was granted Russian citizenship on Monday, Pierre stated that there are criminal charges against him.

"We believe there have been criminal charges brought against him, we would point you to the Department of Justice for any specifics on this," she said.
