Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis said he expected Huicane Milton to inflict significant damage and urged residents to 'prepare for the worst' as he gave an update on the nearing storm in Tallahassee on Tuesday.

“Let’s prepare for the worst, and let’s pray that we get a weakening and hope for the least amount of damage as possible but we must be prepared for a major, major impact to the west coast of Florida,” DeSantis said during his speech, adding that the hurricane "could have really really significant impacts".

He went on to comment on the preparations and rescue capacities urging residents to take 'the decisions necessary'.

"We have our water assets with FHP high-water vehicles, our FWC boat teams and of course we have state guard special missions units and up to 8,000 national guardsmen that will be ready to go and we will do that. But now is the time where you have the ability to make the decisions necessary to keep yourself and your family safe. We urge you to execute your plan now," DeSantis stated.

Milton is approaching Florida with winds of around 250 km/h (145 mph) and is expected to make landfall as a Category 5 storm on Wednesday evening.

It comes just two weeks after Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, killing over 230 people according to media reports.
