The United Nations Security Council held a moment of silence at UNHon Monday night, after the death of the Iranian president and foreign minister in a helicopter crash.

Footage shows Mozambique Ambassador Pedro Comissario Afonso, the holder of the rotating presidency, announcing the mark of respect, as well as members standing.

Following the tribute, Israel's ambassador Gilad Erdan condemned the move as a 'disgrace' and compared it to a 'moment of silence on the anniversary of Hitler's death'.

The Iranian president, his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others were confirmed dead by state media and officials after their helicopter came down in the mountains of northern Iran during heavy fog on Sunday. No official cause has been reported at time of publication.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Condolences came from the leaders of Russia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and others.

Raisi, a conservative cleric seen as close to the Supreme Leader, was elected in 2021. He recently launched strikes on Israel following the bombing of his country's embassy in Damascus - which Israel did not claim responsibility for.
