The alleged plotters are said to be inspired by the unfounded QAnon conspiracy theory that on March 4th, former president Donald Trump will return to power. That belief is based on a theory that all of the presidents in office before the 20th amendment was signed in 1933 were sworn in on March 4th.
Hundreds of National Guard troops patrolled the area surrounding the Capitol on Thursday, carrying rifles, and dressed in camouflage, wearing helmets and military backpacks.
Capitol police released a statement on Wednesday. They warned of a “possible plot to breach the Capitol by an unidentified militia group.” Local businesses have also warned tenants about possible protests.
QAnon followers had previously been touting January 20th as the day of reckoning, when they believed that prominent Democrats would be arrested on the orders of Donald Trump.
The potential threat came almost two months after the infamous U.S. Capitol riot led by Trump supporters, which resulted in five deaths. Rioters stormed the Capitol building, attacking police officers while threatening the lives of numerous politicians.
The riot took place while Congress was attempting to count the Electoral College votes to confirm the result of the 2020 presidential election.
