Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rejected calls to challenge Joe Biden's Presidential victory, warning of a possible 'death spiral' in Washington DC on Wednesday.
Speaking before a Congress gathered to certify the election results, McConnell warned of the precedent that could be set by a refusal to validate the presidential results.
"The voters, the courts, and the states have all spoken. They've all spoken. If we overrule them, it would damage our republic forever," he said.
"If this election were overturned by mere allegations from the losing side, our democracy would enter a death spiral. We would never see the whole nation accept an election again. Every four years would be a scramble for power at any cost," he added.
The Congress session was later interrupted by President Trump supporters storming the Capitol building on Wednesday.
Donald Trump is yet to concede the election to President-elect Biden, as he repeatedly alleges widespread voter fraud.
