Residents of Tehran gathered in Valiasr Square to mourn the passing of their President Ebrahim Raisi on Monday, after the leader was confirmed killed in a helicopter crash.
“Since yesterday, we have not slept when this incident happened until now, we were worried in the morning. Mr. Raisi was our good president. He was a servant of Imam Reza, a servant of the people, and humble," said Amirhossein Karimzadeh, while another local, Saberian, described it as a 'great loss'.
Footage shows people holding portraits of Raisi, as well as Iranian and Palestinian flags, with some seen crying.
"He was really humble and popular," said Haniyeh Esfandiar. "He didn't take it easy for people. All his life (was spent) in the way of serving the people, for the love of serving the people."
The Iranian president, his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others were confirmed dead by state media and officials after their helicopter came down in the mountains of northern Iran during heavy fog on Sunday.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.
Condolences came from the leaders of Russia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and others.
Raisi, a conservative cleric seen as close to the Supreme Leader, was elected in 2021.
