Description

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrel said new sanctions on Belarus would be "finalised in the coming days," during remarks made at a press conference in Brussels on Monday.

"Looking at all possible solutions to stop the regime, the Lukashenko regime, from targeting us, from targeting its own population. And we agreed to expand the scope of the sanctions regime on Belarus," he said.

“We agreed to the adoption of a new package, it will be the fifth one. A new package on sanctions, which will be finalised in the coming days," he added.

The migrant crisis comes amid escalating tensions between the EU and Belarus. Brussels has accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of orchestrating the migrant flow as part of a 'hybrid war' designed to put pressure on the bloc over sanctions. Minsk has denied the claims.

Poland last month strengthened border patrols on the frontier with Belarus and put up a barbed wire fence in place in an attempt to stem the flow.
