Description

London's Kurdish community marched through central London on Saturday, to protest the Turkish military operation in northern Syria.

Protesters were seen waving with Kurdish flags, chanting slogans against the Turkish state and holding a sign reading "Stop arming Erdogan".

"We need people across the political spectrum, across nationalities, beyond all borders, to rise up now to say no to this war because it's an attack on democracy everywhere" one of the protesters said.

Protests took place in several European cities under the slogan "World Resistance Day" to show solidarity with the Kurdish movement and denounce Turkey's actions.

Ankara's military offensive, dubbed 'Operation Peace Spring', began on October 9 with the stated aim of creating a 'safe zone' in north-eastern Syria by removing Kurdish forces, which Turkey regards as terrorists.

Turkey agreed to pause the assault and has now struck a deal with Russia over the conditions for the safe zone. Both sides will carry out joint border patrols while the Russian military will help facilitate the removal of Kurdish militia from the area.
