Description

Gaza's al-Baraka Centre for Quran Memorisation honoured its' students for memorising the Quran in a ceremony held on Friday in Deir al-Balah.

Footage shows attendees of all age groups reciting Islamic nasheeds (chants) together. Some can also be seen receiving certificates for their progress amid the ongoing war.

"It helped us to stay resilient, because when one feels distressed or depressed, they read the Holy Quran to get rid of the depression, it is our only form of escapism," said Bahaa al-Kalhout, a student at the Quran memorisation centre.

One child, Julia Ahmed Hamad, received a certificate for memorising two chapters of the holy book during the war.

"The Holy Quran helped me overcome the difficulties. The Holy Quran taught me steadfastness in this war," she said.

Fighting continues for the tenth month in Gaza after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 38,848 people had been killed and more than 89,459 injured at time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region
