The Finnish men’s national hockey team arrived home after successfully winning their first-ever Olympic gold in the discipline, as seen in Helsinki on Monday.
In the past, Finland had successfully secured silver and bronze medals, but gold always eluded them. They beat Russia on Sunday’s final 2-1.
The team was welcomed by dozens of cheering fans and media in the Helsinki airport arrival hall. Head coach Jukka Salonen expressed some of his thoughts on the historic win.
“It is important that this victory is not my personal achievement at all, this is our common achievement, achieved by the players, the management team’s, and we have talked about it many times,” Salonen said.
Finland is due to host the ice-hockey world championship in May 2022, and many fans will be expecting a home-ground victory.
