Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that the credibility and authority of the United Nations needed to be 'restored' during his speech to the UN General Assembly High-level General Debate on Tuesday.
"We need to talk even when we disagree. We need to restore the eroded credibility and the authority of the United Nations. And I need to say, that why Serbia will strongly support the bigger presence of the African countries in the UN Security Council," he said.
BRICS countries have repeatedly called for more seats and representation on the UNSC, while South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa has demanded 'two seats' for the African continent.
Vucic also accused the 'big leaders' of hypocrisy on Ukraine.
"When big leaders speak vigorously and ardently here about the need for Ukrainian freedom, about observance of the UN and its Charter and resolutions, I ask myself: Why don't they observe the UN Charter and Resolution 1244 when it comes to the territorial integrity of Serbia," he asked.
The resolution, adopted in 1999, agreed terms following the end of the Kosovo war. Kosovo declared independence in 2008, although Serbia and other UN members claimed that violated Resolution 1244.
The UNGA High-level General Debate continues in New York until September 30.
