The European Parliament on Thursday adopted a nonbinding resolution that threatens Russia with action over its handling of jailed Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny, its military activities at the Ukraine border and Moscow's alleged malign activities in the Czech Republic.
The motion was adopted with 569 votes in favour, 67 against and 46 abstentions in Brussels.
Navalny is currently in jail serving a two-year and eight-month jail term for breaching the conditions of a suspended sentence handed to him in 2014. EU has repeatedly expressed its concerns over his conditions in the Russian prison asking for his release.
The resolution was also adopted to signal the EU's concern over accusations Russia was involved in a 2014 warehouse blast in the Czech Republic.
Earlier this week, a group of MEPs suggested the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline would be put on hold and that Russia would be cut off from the SWIFT payment system in response to its recent actions over Alexei Navalny, Ukraine and the Czech Republic.
