Description

COVID sceptic protesters inspired by the 'Freedom convoy' in Canada marched through Vienna on Friday afternoon.

Protesters held Austrian, American and Canadian flags and signs reading, 'I am a truck' and 'the worst virus is blind obedience.'

The police prohibited the Austrian version of the truckers' protest that was planned with around 3,000 vehicles by the opponents of the corona measures on Thursday.

The honking trucks and vans that passed by the rally despite the ban, were cheered on by a crowd playing the drums and blowing whistles.

Police have been on standby since the morning hours, checking vehicles around the city centre, in a bid to avoid a scenario similar to Canada.

The final rally at Heldenplatz was authorised for Friday evening, until 22:30 (local time; 21:30 GMT) after a previous ban, according to local news.
