French President Emmanuel Macron and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen held a press conference in Paris this Friday, calling for a de-escalation of tensions in Kazakhstan.
Speaking of the recent protests in which 44 people had been killed, Von der Leyen stated: "The rights and the security of the citizens are the most important and should be protected, and I appeal to an end to violence and the European Union stands ready to offer its assistance where it can."
Macron reiterated that he has called for "de-esclation" of the tensions and says France is "mobilised to be active."
Protests sparked over rising fuel prices have turned violent, as President Kassym-Jomart Kemelevich Tokayev has ordered security forces to fire on the protesters.
