Description

Imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny appeared in front of the Petushki District Court of the Vladimir region via video link from prison on Monday to ask for an end to hourly nighttime checks.

During the trial, Navalny argued that there was no basis for assigning him a flight risk status.

"This is the most important thing - I am subjected to this penalty, for what? Please explain to me what I did? One more time. Did I climb the fence? Did I dig a hole? Did I steal someone's gun? Explain to me why I was suddenly made prone to escape? And it goes on and on, as Kobzev [Navalny's lawyer] quite correctly noted. Now I am looking at the protocol - there is no expiration. Is that why I've been declared as inclined to commit escape for life? Now three more criminal cases have been opened against me. Because of them, I will be added another 10 years to the term. And it turns out that I will be inclined to escape for 10 years?" said the politician.

"I urge the court and the administration of the institution to pay attention to the basic thing - that de facto I am being punished. I stand on preventive supervision, it is actually a kind of disciplinary punishment. Moreover, in its implementation, I insist on it, it is actually torture. Your Honour, please try setting your alarm eight times a night - you'll go crazy in a week. Or ask your neighbour to come into your apartment at least four times a night, come to your bed and say: 'Your Honour, it's preventive supervision check, ok, you are in place' - and go out," he added.

An employee of Penal Colony No. 2 said that the status of Navalny, as a person inclined to commit escape, will end in three months after registration - on June 11.

"At the same time, the right to sleep of the convicted Navalny was not violated by the staff of the institution," she said.

The court adjourned the hearing until Wednesday.

In February of this year, the court sentenced Navalny to three and a half years in a penal colony for violating probation terms. Navalny's defence considers the court's decision illegitimate.

On March 31, the opposition leader said through his social network account that he was on a hunger strike and demanded that an 'external physician' be allowed to visit him in the colony. According to the lawyer of the opposition leader, his leg and back hurt. On April 15, Navalny's doctors published their letter to the director of the Federal Penitentiary Service, in which they expressed "extreme concern about his [Navalny's] condition, which is approaching critical."

The Federal Penitentiary Service noted that Navalny's health, according to the results of the survey, is assessed as satisfactory and stable, and also stated that in the colony he receives all the necessary assistance.
