"Unfortunately, I should begin our meeting today with the tragedy that took place in Kemerovo region. And before we start the discussion of today's meeting subject, I would like to hold a moment of silence in memory of all those killed in Kemerovo region - both miners and rescuers," said Putin.
The Russian leader also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a quick recovery to the injured, instructing the government provide them all the necessary assistance.
On Friday, Russian authorities released the names of 51 people presumed dead in the incident, which occurred on Thursday in the Kemerovo region.
38 miners and 11 rescue workers are currently hospitalised, according to Kemerovo Governor Sergei Tsivilev, who said that one rescuer had a head injury and the other 10 had suffered from gas poisoning.
According to the Russian Investigative Committee, the Listvyazhnaya mine director and his first deputy are being held in custody. The investigators believe a methane explosion most likely caused the deadly accident.
