02:41US President Joe Biden announced the signing of an executive order returning the US to the Paris climate accord as he signed his first round of orders on Wednesday in the Oval Office in Washington DC.
The order was signed, amongst others, in front of members of the press on the inauguration day of the newly sworn in 46th president. Biden also committed to executive orders on COVID-19 restrictions and racial equity. The US had previously left the Paris accord in 2017, following a decision by former president Donald Trump.
"I think some of the things we're going to be doing are bold and vital and there's no time to start like today" Biden noted, stressing the urgency of the issues faced by American citizens.
Biden also referred to the need for rebuilding the economy and emphasized that the rebuilding of the middle class, which he refers to as the 'backbone of the country,' would be a key focus point in his economic policy.
The president also acknowledged that Trump had left behind a private letter for him, as is traditional, which Biden refused to publicly disclose the contents of, only noting that the message was "generous".
