Belarus was admitted as a full member of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) during a meeting of the Council of Heads of State in Astana on Thursday.

"Today at the summit in Astana an important decision will be made on the further expansion of our organisation. In this regard, I would like to greet the President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko. In a short period of time, your country has completed all the necessary procedures on the way to full membership in the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation." said Kazakhstan's leader Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The footage shows heads of delegations of the SCO member states signing documents on Belarus' admission to the SCO.

The 24th SCO Heads of State Council meeting chaired by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is being held in Astana on July 3-4.

Leaders are discussing the outcomes of the SCO's activities for 2023-2024, and exploring co-operation in political, security, economic and humanitarian affairs.

After the summit in Kazakhstan, the organisation’s presidency will pass to China for 2024-2025.

The organisation comprises India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan - and now Belarus - as well as 14 dialogue partners and three observer countries.
