Kazakhstan's Prosecutor General Berik Asylov claimed the January 2022 riots in the country were co-ordinated by a handler from the country’s Committee for National Security (KNSC), during a speech in the lower house of parliament, on Thursday.

According to Asylov, Arman Dzhumageldiyev, alleged to be a key figure in the criminal underworld, was under the supervision of a KNSC officer and 'was supposed to organise riots, take control of the crowd, and create a so-called people's council to put forward unified ultimatum demands on the authorities'.

"In this he was actively assisted by former deputy of Maslikhat of Alma-Ata city and an active member of criminal group Mahatov who armed the bandits and organised the arrivals to Kazakhstan hotel in Alma-Ata," the prosecutor-general said.

Asylov added that the group failed to 'lead mass protests' and 'people did not follow him'.

Also during the plenary session, the Republic's interior minister added that an active search for weapons was underway.

"In general, it should be noted, dear deputies, that criminals have stolen 2,960 pieces of guns and about 63,000 rounds of ammunition across the country. Their active search is underway now. In the course of operational activities, as part of the investigation of cases, more than 200 caches were liquidated," Marat Akhmetzhanov claimed.

Unsanctioned rallies began in Kazakhstan January 2, after the price of liquid gas jumped from 60 to 120 tenge (0.12 -0.24 Euros) per litre on January 1.

A state of emergency was in force across Kazakhstan from January 5-19 in connection with mass protests.

By decision of the CSTO Collective Security Council, peacekeeping forces from Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Russia were deployed in Kazakhstan from January 6-19 to stabilise the situation in the region.

According to Kazakhstan's Prosecutor General's Office, 238 people, including civilians, were killed during the protests in the country, with the total number of injured at 4,578.

Dzhumageldiyev is currently being held in a pre-trial detention facility of the National Security Committee on charges of firearms possession and inciting riots, according to officials. He has not commented on the allegations made against him.
