Description

Russian Presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov described allegations about Kremlin involvement in the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny as 'baseless', when asked about comments made by his widow Yulia, while speaking with journalists on Tuesday.

"We leave it without comment. Of course, these are absolutely baseless, rude accusations against the Russian president, but given that Yulia Navalnaya became a widow just days earlier, I will leave it without comment," Peskov said.

Meanwhile, he also confirmed reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin had gifted DPRK's leader Kim Jong Un an Aurus car.

"When the DPRK leader was at the Vostochny Cosmodrome, he saw this car. Putin himself personally showed it to him. And of course, like many people, he liked this car. That is why such a decision was made," the spokesperson added, noting the intention to 'develop our relations with all our neighbours, including North Korea'.

Navanly's death was reported on February 16, while serving a lengthy sentence in a Russian jail, following a number of different criminal convictions.

On Monday, Yulia Navalnaya released a video message, stating her intention to continue her husband's work and alleging that he had been 'killed by Vladimir Putin'. US President Joe Biden called the incident 'more proof of Putin's brutality', while NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Russia had 'serious questions to answer'. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky alleged that it was 'obvious' that Vladimir Putin was behind the death. None provided any evidence to back their assertions.

Peskov accused Western leaders of making 'entirely insane' and 'entirely unacceptable' statements, while Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that 'the instant reaction of NATO leaders to Navalny's death in the form of direct accusations against Russia is self-disclosing.'

"There is no forensic examination yet, but the West already has conclusions ready," Zakharova added.

Navalny returned to Moscow in January 2021, after being treated in Germany for an alleged poisoning attempt while on a flight in Russia in August 2020.

He was initially detained at the airport in the Russian capital, and sentenced to two and a half years in jail for a parole violation stemming from a 2014 embezzlement conviction. The politician was subsequently charged with fraud and contempt of court, and given another nine years in prison.

Navalny claimed all accusations against him were politically motivated. In August 2023, he received another 19 years for inciting and financing extremism, among other charges.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) also reported the gift of the Aurus car. Kim Yo Jong, the sister of the DPRK's leader and deputy head of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, referred to the present as 'the best one' and emphasised that it was a clear indication of the strong friendship between the two leaders.
