The commemorative event named Fiery Pictures of War took place in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and Zaporozhye region on the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow on Saturday.
The footage shows volunteers making an image of the Defenders of Donbas monument out of candles and laying flowers at the ‘Eternal Flame’ at the Saur-Mogila memorial complex, while the action participants in Melitopol create a shape of a T-70 tank.
"Today the volunteers of the We Are Together headquarter and the Victory Volunteers have gathered to lay a fiery picture in memory of those who died in the Great Patriotic War. It is a T-70 tank, which was the first to enter Melitopol in the Zaporozhye region and liberate our land from Nazism," said regional headquarter head of We Are Together organisation in Zaporozhye region Kristina Paraskan.
Head of Victory Volunteers Russia-wide public movement in DPR Irina Makarenko said that the activists lit eight thousand candles in memory of the heroes who defended and are defending the region.
"Today we have laid out pictures of two soldiers - a soldier of the Great Patriotic War and a soldier of the current events. So today we light candles in memory of the heroes of those times and our times, because we all fight and continue to fight for our better future," Makarenko added.
The Day of Remembrance and Sorrow commemorates soldiers who perished in WWII (the Great Patriotic War) and takes place annually on June 22, the date Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union.
On September 30, 2022, President Vladimir Putin agreed to sign documents allowing the accession of the DPR (Donetsk People's Republic) and LPR (Lugansk People's Republic), as well as the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye, to the Russian Federation.
According to Moscow, it followed referenda in which people living in those areas exercised their right to self-determination and requested to join Russia.
Ukraine and its international allies condemned the move, calling it an annexation of Kiev’s sovereign territory.
