Description

Colourful fireworks lit up the night sky of St Petersburg at the annual Scarlet Sails school graduates festival on Friday.

Footage shows spectators watching the raising of the Palace Bridge and the fireworks show over the waters of the Neva River from the embankment. The video also features the main symbol of the celebration - the Russia brig with scarlet sails sailing along the Neva River.

The press service of the city government reported that this year graduates from the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) had been also invited to the festival. This year's traditional festival attracted about 70,000 school graduates from almost 40 Russian regions and 16 foreign countries.

The annual Scarlet Sails event for school leavers is held in St Petersburg. It first took place in June 1968 and was inspired by the popular 1922 children's book 'Scarlet Sails' by Alexander Grin. The tradition was subsequently interrupted for 25 years and resumed in 2005.
