Description

Drone footage published by the Russian Defence Ministry on Tuesday appears to show the aftermath of a reported strike on the Mirgorod airfield in Ukraine's Poltava region.

Footage has the location prior to the attack as well as the scorched area of the site following the strike.

The Defence Ministry claimed that Russian Iskander-M operational-tactical missile system units had destroyed Ukrainian aircraft.

"The Iskander-M operational-tactical missile system crews of the Russian Armed Forces delivered a group missile strike at the AFU aircraft parking area. Objective control systems confirmed the engagement of combat aircraft. As a result of the strike, five Su-27 were destroyed and two Su-27 that were repaired were damaged," the department reported.

The Ukrainian side has not commented on the strike at the time of publication. Meanwhile, an AFU report on Tuesday stated that the Russian Armed Forces 'maintain [a] military presence' at the border of the Chernihiv and Sumy regions.

"[Russian military] are carrying out sabotage and reconnaissance operations, shelling residential areas from Russian territory, and expanding the mine belt along Ukraine's state border," it stated. Russia has repeatedly denied targeting civilians in the ongoing conflict.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
