Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov claimed on Monday that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban took serious action to help resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

"Mr Orban is indeed making a serious effort to compare the positions of the different sides relying on primary sources. And we highly appreciate his efforts. We see a lot of disagreements between the parties. But at least Mr Orban is actually attempting to understand the essence of these disagreements," the Kremlin spokesperson stated.

Peskov also commented on the second round of the French parliamentary election.

"It would certainly be better for Russia if the political forces that favour restoring our bilateral relations won. But we have not yet seen anyone show such a clearly expressed political will. Therefore, we are not harbouring any special hopes or illusions," he said.

The presidential spokesperson noted an 'obvious preference shift among French voters' which he described as 'hardly predictable', adding that the Kremlin would closely monitor the formation of the new French government.

France's election was held over two rounds, on June 30 and July 7. Three alliances emerged on top after the vote count, but none of them managed to gain a majority. The left-wing coalition New Popular Front (NFP) secured 182 seats, followed by Macron's centrist Ensemble coalition with over 168, while the National Rally (RN) party came in third and won 143 seats according to media reports. To win a majority a party has to secure at least 289 seats in the National Assembly.

In turn, State Duma Chairperson Vyacheslav Volodin reported that 'Macron was shown to the door' in his official Telegram channel.

"The outcome of the snap French election, which was announced on Macron's initiative, ended in his defeat. The French were ready to vote for anyone but Macron. Political and technological tricks and the withdrawal of candidates were of no help. Macron's party lost," his message said.

On June 9, Macron called the snap legislative vote following huge losses for his Renaissance party in the EU Parliament elections, which saw a huge surge for Jordan Bardella's National Rally (RN). The domestic election had not been expected until 2027.

Last week, Orban travelled to Kiev and Moscow and met with both Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin. Several EU leaders denounced the second visit, claiming Orban had no 'mandate' to discuss the conflict on behalf of the bloc. On 8 July, the Hungarian PM flew to China and held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"My goal was to open the channels of direct communication and start a dialogue on the shortest road to peace. Mission accomplished! To be continued on Monday…" PM Orban wrote on Twitter.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
