Thousands of Muslims gathered at the Moscow Cathedral Mosque on Sunday for Eid al-Adha celebration prayers.

Footage shows believers performing Muslim prayers of namaz inside and outside the mosque.

"Eid al-Adha, which means 'approaching', symbolises our closeness to Allah Almighty through our prayers and righteous deeds. During these days, we seek forgiveness for our sins, pray for the mercy of Allah Almighty for those who have departed, and beseech His blessings upon our country, our people, and His unwavering support for our defenders, anticipating victory for all," said Ravil Gainutdin, chairman of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Russian Federation and the Council of Muftis.

According to the press service of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Russian Federation, sermons and prayers were also held in the Historical and Memorial Mosques of Moscow. Additionally, the reading of namaz took place on an additional platform in the park 'Technical Sports'. In urban districts of the Moscow region, organised sites for animal sacrifice during Eid al-Adha were reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the Muslims and highlighted the contribution of the muslim community to the unity of the people and the development of inter-ethnic and inter-religious dialogue in Russia.

Eid al-Adha, celebrated annually on the tenth day of the month of Zul-Hijjah in the Islamic calendar, marks the end of the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage of Muslims around the world to Mecca.
